Construction & Manufacturing

Contractors, fabricators and industrial suppliers, where the enquiry is technical, the sales cycle is long and the specification decides the sale.

What is different here

What a construction project has to account for

Specification beats persuasion

Buyers are matching capability against a requirement. Tolerances, materials, capacity and certifications do more work than adjectives.

Found by the part, not the brand

Searches name a process, a material or a component. A site organised by company division cannot be found by any of them.

Slow cycles, technical readers

The person reading is frequently an engineer checking whether you are worth a conversation, not a buyer ready to place an order.

What is different about industrial work

The reader is usually technical and is checking a specification against a requirement. That makes the site’s job unusually concrete: publish the capability data, materials, tolerances, capacity, certifications, lead times, in pages that can be found by the process or component somebody searched for, rather than burying it in a downloadable brochure.

Our experience here

No published case study in this sector yet. The closest is the matrix structure used for local services, which solves the same “found by the specific thing, not the general one” problem.

The office work nobody costed

Construction and manufacturing businesses are usually well organised on site and improvised in the office.

Construction and manufacturing businesses are usually well organised on site and improvised in the office. Quotes, variations, certificates, delivery notes and supplier invoices all arrive as paper or as a photograph of paper, and somebody senior ends up typing them at the end of the day.

That is the work that moves first: not because it is complicated, but because it is entirely procedural, and a procedure written down is a procedure somebody else can run.

Construction and manufacturing work, in practice

  • Documents turned into records against a written, approved procedure
  • Exceptions escalated by type, so the same one stops recurring
  • Quote and variation trails kept complete enough to defend

The BPO services page covers how the desk is run, and the back office outsourcing guide what to hand over first.

How this work usually starts

This work starts with whatever is currently being typed up at the end of the day. Quotes, tickets, certificates, supplier invoices: one week of watching what actually arrives and in what form is enough to write the procedure, and the procedure is what makes the work possible to hand over at all.

Two things make office work handoverable in construction and manufacturing: a written procedure, and a named owner for each exception type. Without them a support desk becomes a second inbox; with them it becomes a control.

Before you decide

Reading for construction

Written by the people who deliver the work: what it involves, what it costs to get wrong, and where handing it over is worth it.
