What you get

What you are actually buying

A logo is the smallest part of this. Six things that decide whether the identity still works a year later.

A system, not a picture

Logo, colour, type, spacing and component rules, defined together so the fifth application looks like the first one rather than like a guess.

Contrast checked before sign-off

A palette that looks elegant in a presentation and fails 4.5:1 on a real page costs you a rebuild. Every pairing is measured while it can still be changed cheaply.

Guidelines somebody will use

Written as instructions rather than as a manifesto: the hex values, the spacing scale, the rules for the awkward cases, and what not to do.

Every file, in your hands

Vector masters, exports and the source design files. You should never have to come back to us to get a logo in a format you need.

Drawn for where it will sit

A favicon, an app icon, a social avatar and a printed sign are different problems. The mark is tested at 16 pixels and at a metre before it is signed off.

Carried into the build

On the Brand + Digital tier the design system is handed over as tokens and components, so the website inherits the brand rather than reinterpreting it.

Use cases

What we design

Logo and identity

The mark, the wordmark, the lockups, and the rules for which one goes where.

Brand systems

Colour, typography, imagery direction, iconography and tone, defined as a set rather than as a mood board.

Brand guidelines

A document the next agency, the next printer and the next developer can all follow.

Design systems and UI kits

Tokens, components and key screens, built so the website and the brand cannot drift apart.

Social and campaign creative

Templates for the formats you post in weekly, so the brand survives being used at speed.

Print and packaging

Stationery, signage, packaging artwork and anything else that has to be right the first time because it is being printed.

How it works

How an identity project runs

  1. Positioning first

Who it is for, what it competes against, and what it needs to say in the three seconds before anyone reads anything.

  2. Two directions

Two genuinely different concepts, each argued rather than decorated. Not six variations of one idea.

  3. Build the system

The chosen direction extended into colour, type, spacing and the applications you will actually use.

  4. Hand over and apply

Files, guidelines and, on the digital tier, tokens and components ready for the build.

What we will tell you

A rebrand rarely fixes a sales problem

If people find you and do not enquire, the issue is more often the offer or the proof than the logo. A rebrand is expensive and highly visible, which makes it a satisfying place to spend money that belonged somewhere else.

Your existing brand may be worth keeping

Recognition is an asset. Sometimes the right answer is a tidy-up, fixing the contrast, redrawing the mark for small sizes, writing the missing rules, rather than starting again.

Guidelines nobody reads are wasted money

A forty-page brand book that lives in a folder has changed nothing. We would rather write ten pages that a developer and a printer will both open.

What a brand has to survive

A logo is signed off at full size, on a white slide, by people who already know what the company does. It then has to work at 16 pixels in a browser tab, as a circular avatar, reversed on a photograph, printed on a van and embroidered on a shirt. Most identity problems are not taste problems; they are drawings that were never tested anywhere except the presentation.

Colour is a measurable thing

Every pairing in the palette is checked against the WCAG 2.2 AA contrast ratios before the palette is agreed: 4.5:1 for body text, 3:1 for large text and interface components. A palette that fails gets changed during the design, which is cheap, rather than during the build, which is not, and it is the reason the brand on the site ends up matching the brand in the document.

Guidelines written to be used

The audience for a brand guideline is a developer implementing a page, a printer setting up a job, and whoever posts on social on a Friday afternoon. So it contains hex values, spacing rules, file locations, the rules for the awkward cases and a short list of what not to do, rather than an essay about the brand’s values.

From guideline to build

On the Brand + Digital tier the output is a design system: tokens, components and key screens that the website consumes directly. That is what prevents the familiar outcome where the identity is beautiful, the site is close enough, and nobody can say exactly when they stopped matching. Starting prices for all three tiers are published on the offers and pricing page.

A logo is not a brand system

Designer and founder reviewing printed brand identity elements laid out on a table
Most identity work is bought as a logo and needed as a system.

Most identity work is bought as a logo and needed as a system. A mark on its own survives a business card and falls apart the first time somebody has to build a slide, a social post, an email header and a shopfront sign from it — at which point four people make four different decisions and the identity quietly stops existing.

What prevents that is a small amount of structure: the palette with its accessible pairings, the type scale, the spacing rule, and one page that says what to do when a situation is not covered.

Branding and design, in practice

  • Colour pairings checked for contrast, so the identity is usable as well as attractive
  • A usage guide written for the people who will actually apply it
  • The system carried into the website rather than stopping at a PDF

See website development for how an identity is carried into a build, and creative design services for what a system contains.

How this work usually starts

Identity work starts with where the brand has to appear. A business that needs a logo, a palette and a deck is a different job from one that needs signage, packaging and a storefront, and pricing either as the other is how identity projects go wrong in both directions.

Two things decide whether an identity survives its first year: whether the usage guide was written for the people applying it, and whether the system reached the website. A brand that lives only in a PDF is a brand nobody can follow.

FAQ

Branding and design questions

How much does branding cost?

Branding starts at $220 one-time, in US dollars, for a logo, palette, typography and a usage guide. Fuller work — written guidelines, stationery and social templates, or a design system the website consumes directly — builds on that same foundation, so starting small never means redoing it later.

How long does it take?

2 to 3 weeks for a logo, palette and usage guide. Fuller work — guidelines, templates or a design system — runs longer, and the date is agreed before it starts. Most of the variation is in how quickly decisions are made rather than in how long the design takes.

What files do we get?

Vector masters in AI, EPS and SVG, PNG exports at the sizes you need, and the source design files. They are yours; you never need our permission or our involvement to use them.

Do you check the colours for accessibility?

Yes, before sign-off. Every foreground and background pairing in the palette is measured against WCAG 2.2 AA. A palette that fails is a palette that will be quietly changed by whoever builds the site.

Can you work with our existing brand?

Often that is the better buy. Recognition you already have is worth keeping, and the practical problems, small-size legibility, missing formats, failing contrast, no written rules, are usually fixable without starting again.

Will the website match the brand?

Where the work includes a design system, it is handed over as tokens and components, which is what stops the site from reinterpreting the brand. Where it does not, the guidelines are written specifically so a developer can follow them.
